The Spirit: Souce of Our Power So Every One Can Play

Pastor Happy Lehman of Vineyard Champaign preached a sermon entitled “Showing Power” on July 18, 2004, which we had used (listened to) to help us start to shift our focus from understanding (the kingdom) to personal application. You can borrow the CD from us or follow the web-link to Vineyard Champaign’s website and listen to the sermon online.

The key points are outlined below:

Invitation to be a Super Hero
God is giving each one of us an opportunity to be a super Hero who rescues people who are hurting, and in bondage. This is what Christianity is all about!

The gospel was always meant to be shared in words and works. Mix words with works, show and tell. (Evangelism is speaking and showing God’s power).

What’s our source of Power?
Every Super Hero has a source of power? They are not born with supernatural power. Peter Parker was bitten by a radio active spider. Our source is the Holy Spirit, who now dwells in us.

Super Hero, sometimes, at various times
Elijah is an Old Testament example of a Super Hero, in 1 King 18. Yet in the next moment, he loses the power. Peter is a New Testament example of another sometimes Super Hero, and of the gospel message told and shown.

How to be a Super Hero?
Be alive, full of kingdom life. After all in Acts 1:8 God promises that you will receive power when the Spirit comes on you.

Be filled with the Spirit.

Be available, be alert. We have been given great authority. (Happy loves the phrase “With great authority / power comes great responsibility). Step up to do the job (any one, wherever you are). God is setting you up to be a Super Hero! Open your eyes. People are hurting everywhere. Be ready to pray and minister.
